Lose Weight in 2017 without the Gym

In 11 days people all around the world will crowd fitness centers. It’s normal. The common goal is weight loss and the desire to be healthier in the new year. I get it because I’m a goal setter as well. In fact, losing weight is always on my list of resolutions. I’ve been successful with losing my desired weight without the use of a gym membership and I want to help you do the same. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not as fit as I want to be, but that’s because I like to snack more than I move. Soooo, let’s save this money and get lean in 2017!

  1.  Invest in exercise equipment –  No, I’m not asking you to buy a treadmill, elliptical, or stationary bicycle.  Those are all great, but they are not necessary to reach your weight loss goal. An inexpensive set of dumbbells, resistance bands, or a kettlebell will do the job for most strength training workouts. Strength training? Ha! Yes! Cardio will help you drop pounds, but strength training provides faster weight loss as well as a sculpted and toned physique.

  2. Walk your neighborhood or park – Forget about what your neighbors or family says and just take that stroll. People are going to talk about you if you are overweight or if you are trying to lose weight. Walking for at least 30 minutes a day will provide so many wonderful benefits for your physical and mental health. Check out this article from Prevention that lists so many of the wonderful benefits that walking provides. Can’t walk your neighborhood or park? Don’t forget that the mall or your church parking lot is great space for walking as well.

  3. Gaming System – Do you or your kids own a gaming system? If so, please believe that you can get a great workout by using it as well. The Xbox 360 and Xbox One uses the Kinect for a fun interactive experience. Check out this list of Kinect games that will definitely get your heart rate pumping and jeans fitting looser. The Wii gaming system is also fun and highly capable of helping you shed unwanted pounds. Here is a list of Wii games that I suggest you check out for fitness and weight loss.

  4. DVD’s – Before I used any of the other methods listed above to workout without a gym, I used DVDs. I enjoyed being able to pause, rewind, and take them with me as well. Before you pay full price be sure and check your local library, thrift store, or local video resale stores. You can score some real deals or switch them up frequently by using a library. Two personal favorites of mine are The Hollywood Trainer and Gymnetics Fitness Black Girls Workout Too.

  5. YouTube – YouTube has a large amount of workout videos that will help you reach any fitness goal that you have in mind. The great thing about YouTube is that it’s absolutely free. I suggest that you type in key words such as “at home cardio”, “workouts without weights”, or “3o minute workouts” to get started. I enjoy using Pop Sugar and BeFit.

  6. Zumba – Zumba is a fun and high paced workout. The music and modern dance moves will sometimes make you forget that you are actually trying to burn fat. It is perfect for many ages and even allows you to brush up on some old dance moves. Many classes are free or cost around $10 a week. To save money in your pocket and buy those brand new weight loss reward jeans, I suggest that you alternate Zumba with free workouts at home.

  7. Dancing at Home – Dancing can burn tons of calories and it’s absolutely free. Create your own workout music playlist on YouTube or Pandora. If you have kids allow them to join in on the fun as well. Dance like nobody is watching!

Expecting Moms – Now I can’t forget my expecting moms. Working out during pregnancy has many positive health benefits for mom and baby.  Remember to always make sure that you discuss all workouts regimens and equipment with your doctor before beginning. Many doctors suggest that if a mom is physically active prior to pregnancy, they may continue with those workouts. Remember to drink lots of water and eat a balanced meal before and afterwards. Listen to your body and your baby on how much is too much. When I was pregnant with my son I enjoyed using the Prenatal Fitness Fix DVD. It was low impact, but just enough to get my heart rate going.

I hope that the new year brings you great health. Take the time to take care of your physical and mental health by working out and eating balanced meals. What I’ve learned about being a mom is that I need to take care of  myself first, so that I can take care of my family even better. This applies to you as well. You can’t be the best person for your family if you don’t take care of YOU!

Have a blessed day!
